Science, and con-science. There is knowledge (science), and then there's something called "with-knowledge." That's what "conscience" means: the deeper awareness that must go along with our book learning; the knowledge that divides right from wrong. The Christians in Corinth were impressed with their big brains and all that was in them, but had forgotten how to use their hearts.
