Salt. It's a life-sustaining nutrient, it makes things taste good...and it raises some people's blood pressure. Jesus uses metaphors not just to explain the Kingdom, but to explain us to ourselves. We disciples, He said, are the "salt of the earth." In that time and place, salt was as vital as water - and, as many have pointed out, it was used as a preservative. But even in our hypertensive times the comparison still works; our saltiness will cause an adverse reaction in some. Jim's new sermon is called Being Good for Nothing. He's in Matthew, chapter 5.
